Every August, National Heritage Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate the history, stories and traditions that have shaped communities across Ireland.
Here in Waterford, heritage is all around us — from the city’s Viking origins and medieval streets to its historic buildings, museums, traditions and the stories passed down through generations.
At Dooley’s Hotel, heritage is something we know a little about ourselves.
79 Years of Dooley’s
This year, Dooley’s Hotel celebrates 79 years at the heart of Waterford.
Since opening our doors in 1947, Dooley’s has been part of the life of the city. Over almost eight decades, generations of guests have walked through our doors, celebrated special occasions with us, enjoyed family meals, attended events and made memories in the heart of Waterford.
While the hotel has evolved over the years, our connection with the city remains at the heart of what we do.
Our history is not simply about a building or a date on a timeline. It is about the people who have worked here, the guests who have stayed with us and the many stories that have become part of Dooley’s over the decades.
Discover Waterford’s Heritage
National Heritage Week is the perfect time to explore the history right on our doorstep.
Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, with more than 1,100 years of history to discover. From the Viking Triangle and Reginald’s Tower to Waterford Treasures museums, the city offers fascinating glimpses into its past.
A stroll through the city streets reveals layers of history at every turn, while the River Suir has been central to Waterford’s development for centuries.
For visitors staying at Dooley’s, much of Waterford’s heritage can be explored easily from our city-centre location.
Heritage That Continues to Evolve
Heritage isn't just about looking backwards. It is also about how we preserve the character of a place while allowing it to evolve.
That is something we see throughout Waterford.
Historic buildings sit alongside contemporary businesses, new art and modern culture. Events such as Waterford Walls bring a fresh creative energy to the city, while traditional attractions and stories continue to connect visitors with Waterford's past.
At Dooley’s, we are proud to be part of that changing story.
After 79 years, we continue to welcome new generations of visitors while remaining connected to the history and community that have shaped the hotel.
